Best Desk Size for HDB Bedrooms

6 min read

Most HDB bedrooms weren't built with a home office in mind. Here's how to size a standing desk that fits the room instead of taking it over.

Compact standing desk setup sized for a small Singapore bedroom

A typical HDB common bedroom runs roughly 8-10 sqm, and a master bedroom in a 3- or 4-room flat isn't dramatically bigger. A desk sized for a Western home office will eat the room. Here's how to size it correctly.

Measure the wall, not the desk

Before looking at desk dimensions, measure the actual wall space you're planning to use, minus clearance for a door swing, wardrobe, or window. Most HDB desks end up against a wall under a window or beside a wardrobe, so the available width is usually 100-140cm, not the 150-180cm a "standard" desk assumes.

Standing desk widths and what they suit

Use these as planning starting points, not fit guarantees. Measure your usable wall width, door swing, wardrobe clearance, chair travel, power-point position, and the desk's published dimensions before ordering.

Your setup Start your planning with Confirm before checkout
Laptop or compact display The smallest desk footprint that leaves walking room Keyboard depth, chair movement, and a clear cable route
One external monitor Enough width for the screen, keyboard, and daily work surface VESA and desk-mount clearance if you intend to use an arm
Two monitors or a desktop PC A wider worktop only after measuring the actual room Each monitor's position, desk-edge clearance, and cable travel at standing height
  • 100-120cm: fits a laptop plus one monitor, or a laptop alone with a monitor arm. This is the realistic width for a single HDB bedroom used as a part-time office.
  • 120-140cm: the most common width for a dedicated WFH setup — laptop, one external monitor on an arm, and some desk space left over.
  • 150cm+: comfortable for dual monitors, but check your wall space carefully before committing; this width can dominate a smaller room.

Check the current product page for published size options, then pick the width after measuring the room rather than the other way around. If you plan to use a second screen, also use the monitor arm selection guide.

Depth matters more than people expect

Desk depth (front to back) is often overlooked. A 60cm depth is standard and works with most monitor arms; anything shallower than 55cm will feel cramped once you add a monitor arm and keyboard tray. If the room is tight on width but you have some depth to spare, a monitor arm (rather than a stand) frees up desk surface without needing more width — see our monitor arm buying guide.

Don't forget clearance for standing

Standing desks need a bit more floor clearance than sitting desks — you'll be shifting weight and stepping back slightly through the day. Leave at least 60-70cm of clear floor behind the chair position, even in a small room.

The bottom line

Measure your actual wall space first, pick a desk width that leaves at least 20cm of buffer either side, and use a monitor arm instead of a stand if depth or surface space is tight. For more on making a small room work as a full WFH setup, see our HDB home office setup ideas.
