Standing Desk Not Moving? Reset, Error Codes & Troubleshooting Guide

A practical, brand-neutral process for diagnosing a standing desk that is stuck, uneven, unresponsive, or not moving up or down.

Short answer

If a standing desk will not move, start by removing anything trapped underneath or overloading the desktop, check the wall power and every controller connection, then use the reset procedure in that desk's own manual. A reset is commonly used to recalibrate the lowest height, but the button sequence, error codes and safety limits differ between brands and models. Do not force the desk, bypass anti-collision protection, or keep pressing the controls if a leg is visibly binding.

Before you troubleshoot

1. Unplug the desk before inspecting cables, the control box or the legs.
2. Remove anything under the desktop, including drawers, chairs, cable bundles and wall-mounted items that could stop travel.
3. Take fragile monitors, speakers and heavy items off the desk if it is tilted, jammed or moving unevenly.
4. Never work under a raised desk unless its manufacturer provides a safe support method.

Step 1: Check power and the control panel

Reconnect the desk directly to a known-working wall outlet. Check that the power brick is fully seated at both ends, then inspect the handset cable and each leg-motor plug where they enter the control box. A loose plug can make the handset look dead even when the outlet is working.

If the display is blank, test the outlet with another device. If it lights up but the desk will not move, note the exact message or code before unplugging it. Do not guess what an error code means from a different brand's manual.

Step 2: Remove overload and anti-collision triggers

Many electric desks stop when they sense an obstruction or an unexpected change in resistance. Clear the full path above and below the desk, then reduce a heavily loaded or uneven desktop before testing again. A monitor arm, PC tower and cable tray can put a lot of load near one edge even when the desk feels manageable by hand.

If the desk stops at the same height every time, look for a wall shelf, window ledge, cable snag or under-desk accessory touching the frame. The right response is to clear the obstruction, not to disable the safety system.

Step 3: Reset or recalibrate the desk

Use the procedure printed in the manual for your specific control panel. On many desks this involves moving to the lowest position, holding a down or reset control until the desk briefly moves or confirms calibration, then releasing only when the display indicates completion. That is not universal: some handsets use a dedicated reset key, a menu sequence, or a different hold time.

Keep your hands clear while the desk moves. If the desk cannot reach its lowest height, moves only one leg, or makes grinding or repeated clicking noises, stop the reset and move to the fault checks below.

Step 4: If the desk will not go up or down

Work through these checks in order:

1. Power-cycle the desk at the wall for the period stated in its manual.
2. Confirm the handset, power supply and both leg cables are fully inserted and not pinched.
3. Remove excess or uneven load, then try a model-specific reset.
4. Check whether a lock mode or child lock is enabled on the handset.
5. If one direction works but the other does not, record the display message and stop repeated attempts.

A desk that does not respond after those checks may have a failed handset, power supply, control box, motor or cable. Those parts are not interchangeable across brands just because the connectors look similar.

Step 5: If the desk is uneven or one side is stuck

Stop using the desk if one side is clearly higher than the other. First remove the load and inspect for an obstruction around each leg, crossbar and cable route. Check the frame bolts and desktop fixings only as your manufacturer instructs, since overtightening or adjusting the wrong component can make alignment worse.

If both legs are clear but they do not travel together after a reset, arrange service. Continuing to run an uneven desk can strain the frame, desktop and motor system.

What error codes mean

Error labels are controller-specific. They can relate to overload, overheating, an interrupted reset, a communication problem, or a motor/control-box fault. Search the exact code in the manual for your desk's brand and model, not a generic error-code list. If the code returns immediately after a clear path, cable check and model-approved reset, contact that brand's support team with the code, desk model and a short video of the symptom.

When the desk may be faulty

Stop troubleshooting and arrange qualified support when you notice a burning smell, heat from the control box or power brick, damaged insulation, grinding, one leg not moving, repeated error codes, a desk that moves by itself, or a frame that remains uneven after the approved reset. Can I reset any standing desk by holding the down button?

No. That is common, not universal. Use the instructions for the exact handset and frame you own, because the wrong sequence may not reset it and can hide useful error information.

Why does anti-collision keep stopping my desk?

Something may be touching the desk, a cable may be pulling tight, the load may be uneven, or the sensitivity may need model-approved calibration. Do not disable the feature as a workaround.

Is a standing desk motor repairable?
