Standing Desk Height Guide: Find a Comfortable Starting Position

Quick answer: Your starting desk height is your relaxed elbow height from the floor when standing, or your seated elbow height when sitting. Your forearms should be roughly level with the keyboard and mouse, with shoulders relaxed. Use the numbers below as starting points—not fixed prescriptions.

Approximate standing keyboard height by user height

User height Approximate desk-height starting range
150–159 cm 90–98 cm
160–169 cm 98–104 cm
170–179 cm 104–110 cm
180–189 cm 110–116 cm
190 cm and above 116–122 cm

Arm length, footwear, keyboard thickness, monitor position and personal comfort all matter. If the range feels wrong, measure your own elbow height rather than forcing the desk to match a table.

How do I set the correct standing desk height?

Stand naturally, let your arms rest at your sides, then bend your elbows to work position. Raise or lower the desk until the keyboard sits around that elbow height. Your shoulders should not be shrugged and your wrists should not be bent upward to reach the keys.

How do I set seated desk height?

Adjust the chair first. Sit with feet supported and knees comfortable, then set the keyboard near seated elbow height. If the desk is too high after the chair is adjusted, a footrest may help; do not compromise stable foot support just to reach the keyboard.

Monitor height and distance

Place the screen approximately an arm’s length away, then adjust for your eyesight and display size. The top of the screen should be around, or a little below, comfortable eye level. Use a monitor arm when needed so the screen—not your neck—does the adapting.

When should I change position?

Change before discomfort builds. A useful practical pattern is to alternate sitting, standing and short movement breaks. The popular 20-8-2 idea—20 minutes sitting, 8 standing, 2 moving—is a reminder to vary posture, not a medical requirement for every person.

Does the ULTI Arc Pro fit my height?

The current ULTI Arc Pro product page lists a 64–124 cm height range. Measure your seated and standing elbow heights, account for the tabletop and keyboard, then compare them with the selected desk setup. If you use a monitor arm, allow for monitor height independently of keyboard height.

Ergonomic setup checklist

  • Shoulders relaxed; elbows near 90 degrees.
  • Keyboard and mouse close to the body.
  • Monitor at a comfortable eye-level height and roughly an arm’s length away.
  • Feet supported; change position when discomfort starts.
  • Keep moving during the day—standing does not replace exercise.
