How High Should You Mount a TV? A Singapore Living Room Measurement Guide

There is no single “correct” TV height because sofa height, viewing distance, screen size and the way you sit all matter. The practical goal is simple: place the main area of the screen near your natural line of sight from the usual seat, then use tilt only for a small adjustment—not to correct a poorly chosen height.

Start from your actual sofa

Sit where you normally watch. Measure your eye height from the floor, then use that as a starting reference for the screen centre. Mark the proposed centre on the wall with painter’s tape and have someone hold a paper outline or the bracket template at that position. This lets you check the view before drilling.

What changes the ideal height?

  • Sofa and seat height: a low sofa lowers the viewer’s eye line.
  • Screen size: a larger screen has a taller viewing area.
  • Viewing distance: closer seats make an overly high screen more noticeable.
  • Furniture: a TV console or soundbar may set a practical lower boundary.
  • Room use: a dining/living room may need slight flexibility or a full-motion bracket.

When should you use a tilt mount?

A tilt mount is useful where the TV must sit a little above eye level, for example above furniture or in a bedroom. It can direct the screen toward viewers and reduce reflections, but excessive downward tilt is a clue that the mounting height should be reconsidered. Compare fixed, tilt and full-motion mounts before choosing.

Don’t forget the bracket’s geometry

The TV mounting holes are not always at the centre of the display, and the bracket wall plate may not sit at the same height as the screen centre. Use the mount’s installation template and product dimensions to calculate the final screen position. Also check VESA, bare TV weight, wall type and rear-port clearance.

Pre-installation checklist

  1. Measure seated eye height.
  2. Mark and test the proposed screen centre.
  3. Account for the bracket’s offset and TV VESA position.
  4. Plan soundbar, power and HDMI cables.
  5. Confirm the wall and bracket suit the verified TV weight.

How to use this guide for your own setup

Plan the installation before choosing hardware

Write down the TV model, screen size, weight without its stand, VESA pattern and the wall construction. A compatible VESA pattern is necessary, but it is not the full answer: mounting surface, cable access, viewing distance, furniture height and soundbar clearance all affect the result.

Use this pre-installation worksheet

  1. Mark the seated eye line and decide where the centre of the screen should sit.
  2. Check the TV’s VESA pattern and weight against the mount’s published range.
  3. Identify the wall type and locate a suitable fixing area. Do not assume a wall is suitable from a photo alone.
  4. Plan power, signal cables and any soundbar before the TV is mounted. Full-motion arms need slack throughout their travel.

When in doubt, share the TV model, wall details and a room photo with the installer or seller before booking. This guide should help you ask the right questions; it should not replace the product instructions or professional assessment of the mounting surface.
