A standing desk should help you work comfortably at different heights. If the desk shakes at standing height, though, the movement can distract you and make monitors feel harder to use. Here is what causes wobble, what can make it worse, and what to check before you choose a desk.
Why standing desks can wobble more at standing height
At a taller position, the telescoping legs are more extended. That can make movement more noticeable than when the desk is low. A heavy display, a monitor arm with a long reach, an uneven floor or hardware that has not been fully tightened can add to the effect.
Check stability with your real setup in mind
Look beyond the desktop alone. Account for the desk, monitors, monitor arms, computer and accessories you will actually use. Review the desk height range, frame construction and published load rating, then make sure the desk suits your own working height.
How to test a desk before you buy
- Raise it to the height you expect to work at.
- Type normally and move the mouse while looking at the display.
- Test a monitor arm at its intended position and reach.
- Check that the floor is level and the desk feet are firmly supported.
- Confirm the combined load of your setup is appropriate for the desk and arms.
Plan the whole workstation, not only the desktop
A stable desk is the foundation. Once the frame and size fit your space, choose monitor arms, cable routing and power access that work through the desk’s full height range.
